MY-CO PLACE: Architecture of Sustainable Growth
Today’s fungal biotechnology is exploring how the metabolic potential of fungi can be harnessed for a sustainable and circular bioeconomy. Soon, fungi will be used not only to produce medicines, enzymes, and biofuels, but also clothing, furniture, and even houses. MY-CO PLACE explores how this might work and what bio-based scenarios for possible living environments of the future—with and through fungi—seem feasible to us today.
MY-CO PLACE is a temporary meeting space in the heart of Berlin that places fungi and fungal materials at the center of a debate about future ways of building and living. From May 12 to July 31, 2023, BHROX Bauhaus reuse—an urban laboratory for transdisciplinary education, research, and participation located in the middle of Ernst-Reuter-Platz—will be transformed into a “fungal space.”
Here, at MY-CO PLACE, visitors can come into direct contact with the microscopic yet macroscopically perceptible world of fungi. This space will serve as a learning station, exhibition space, and discussion platform where sustainable living and housing with and through fungi can be experienced, explored, and understood.
MY-CO PLACE is a transdisciplinary real-world laboratory led by Prof. Vera Meyer (TU Berlin) and Prof. Sven Pfeiffer (Bochum University of Applied Sciences); as part of StadtManufaktur Berlin, it brings together researchers, students, and partners from the fields of culture, civil society, business, and politics. Through lectures, workshops, seminars, and educational projects, participants will jointly discuss potentials and utopian visions for a sustainably built environment and collaboratively develop solution scenarios for the Berlin-Brandenburg metropolitan region.
