Living the Forest Lab

Prototyping to Protect the Forest

“Living the Forest Lab” is a research initiative funded by the Foundation for Innovation in Higher Education and based at TU Berlin, Faculty IV (Electrical Engineering and Information Technology), Department of Communication Systems.

This project aims to promote transdisciplinary teaching through experimental and open-ended projects that develop prototype solutions for forest conservation. By connecting open-source, maker, and open-hardware communities with students, laboratories, experts, and the public, the project addresses the ecological, social, and economic functions of forests. Recognizing the crucial role that forests play in biodiversity and climate regulation, the project emphasizes the importance of forest conservation for mitigating climate change and preserving ecosystems. Using a living lab approach, the project integrates scientific research with real-world applications to address complex problems at the local level and encourages communities to share knowledge and collaboratively develop prototypes.
