Living Lab
House of Materialization: Urban Mining and Environmental Communication
Centrally located on Alexanderplatz, the Haus der Materialisierung (HdM) is emerging as a hub for sustainable resource use. Material cycles for waste and used materials, food, ideas, and objects are established here and disseminated from this location. Woodworking, textile, metalworking, goldsmithing, upcycling, and bicycle workshops—along with courses, rental and repair initiatives, social and educational programs, urban gardening, and exhibitions—offer communal experiences and space for the future through direct engagement with the neighborhood. The HdM is a place to experiment with a sustainable and resource-conserving way of life, to tackle necessary social changes together.
As a starting point for material research, artistic processes, and the search for a more socially and ecologically just social organization, we want to bring together people who are working in different ways toward a better future. Our goal is a solidarity-based, ecological, and democratic economic system. We do not view money, capital, and growth as the driving forces of social action, but rather people, nature, and the conservation of resources. Only an economic system that does not come at the expense of others is a sustainable economy. For us, prosperity means intact ecosystems, social cohesion, and true democracy.
