Save the Date! Nutrient and Sanitation Conference on Urban Water, September 11–12, 2024, Architecture Forum, TU Berlin
In cooperation with kubus—the TU Berlin Science Shop, the Berlin Chamber of Architects, and other partners, StadtManufaktur Berlin invites you on September 11 and 12, 2024, to discuss topics related to urban nutrient and sanitation management and to exchange ideas on best designs and practices surrounding the urban water cycle.
Titled “Recycling Nutrients, Conserving Water, Eliminating Pollutants,” the event is aimed at a broad professional audience.
Background:
Water scarcity is a global problem that also affects eastern Germany. The groundwater level is falling, and the region is becoming increasingly arid. At the same time, valuable drinking water is used daily for the disposal of fecal matter. There have long been calls for a “Blue Deal”—analogous to the “Green Deal”—to promote water-efficient technologies.
The connection between water scarcity and nutrient deficiency is often overlooked. Important nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus are found in wastewater but are usually not recovered. Instead, wastewater treatment plants consume immense amounts of energy, and the nutrients are replaced with synthetic fertilizers. However, the immense impact on nature could certainly be avoided if this were not the case.
Conference objectives:
The conference aims to raise awareness of this topic while presenting and discussing strategies for addressing these challenges. The goal is to present and further develop both theoretical and practical approaches to resource-efficient and circular sanitation systems.
Event Details:
At the Architecture Forum of the TU Berlin, participants can expect a diverse program featuring lectures, panel discussions, film screenings, workshops, and a “Market of Possibilities” where specific technologies and projects will be showcased. International experts will also contribute their expertise.
The event is aimed particularly at architects, urban planners, industry professionals, users, as well as policymakers and government officials. It is recognized by the Berlin Chamber of Architects as continuing education, allowing participating architects to earn continuing education credits. There is no registration fee to enable as many interested individuals as possible to attend.
More information and the registration form can be found here.
