What might student housing look like in the future—and what role can existing campus buildings play in this? The student-initiated “Campus as Commons” project is exploring these questions. Over the past few weeks, an impressive mock-up has been created on the 7th floor of the TU Math Building, demonstrating how learning spaces can be temporarily transformed into living spaces.
The conference’s theme is “Urban Transformation,” and it aims to connect “Urban Sustainability Labs” worldwide with one another and with research approaches on relevant topics. The conference will take place from October 15 to 17, 2025, in Karlsruhe. Designed as a “learning conference,” the event emphasizes the need for dialogue and collaboration among academia, practitioners, civil society, and citizens. It aims to inspire new ideas, stimulate innovation, and support the joint development of solutions to the pressing challenges facing cities worldwide.
Test sites, experimental areas, and real-world labs exist and are emerging in Berlin and Brandenburg. For some, experimental clauses are relevant within highly regulated sectors. Together with Berlin Partner for Business and Technology, the Senate Department for Economics, Energy, and Public Enterprises, and Zukunftsorte Berlin, we invite providers and interested parties to a networking event to tap into innovative synergies for the growing metropolitan region!
Urban agriculture in the heart of the city – highly productive, resource-efficient, and collaborative
On April 15, 2024, we harvested our MensaFarm at Cafáneo in the main library of TU Berlin and the Berlin University of the Arts (UdK) for the first time. The Department of Education for Sustainable Nutrition and Food Science and StadtManufaktur jointly operate the hydroponic vertical farm.
On January 18, 2024, the first joint workshop between StadtManufaktur Berlin and the B!NErLE Department—Education for Sustainable Nutrition and Food Science—took place. This marks the official launch of the joint project “Edible Campus” Real-World Lab!
On November 15, 2023, we held our first workshop for the participatory further development of the digital data table with approximately 30 colleagues from various departments and disciplines at TU Berlin and the Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf district. The data table is being further developed as a web-based participation and scenario-planning tool within the ClimateHOOD_CampusPARK_Charlottenburg project.
It was a pleasure for us to provide technical support for the development of Berlin’s pilot funding program for real-world labs.
