State of Berlin Funding for Real-World Laboratories

2026-07-01T12:38:39+02:00

Planning and construction using reused building materials, recycling, and heat recovery from graywater—for the first time in existing buildings—as well as the delivery of goods and medical supplies via drones: these are the focus areas of the three real-world labs in Berlin, which will receive a total of approximately nine million euros in funding from the Senate Department for Economics, Energy, and Public Enterprises over the next three years. TU Berlin is involved in all three projects and is even serving as the consortium coordinator for one of them. Congratulations!

Schwammstadt, TU Berlin North Campus – Kick-Off!

2026-07-01T11:45:34+02:00

The Charlottenburg Campus is a real-world laboratory for climate protection and climate adaptation. Thanks to EU funding, the existing buildings on the TU campus can now be developed according to the “sponge city” principle and become a venue for research and teaching in a real-world laboratory setting. At the Hydraulics Hall (Building W—Hydraulics and Water Management), solar energy will be utilized in the future; various structural modules will be installed for climate-effective and productive greening of the facade, and the facility will be managed using rainwater collected from the roof. We welcome expert collaboration!

Reallabor Campus at the Long Night of Science on June 28, 2025

2026-07-01T11:33:11+02:00

The Charlottenburg Campus is a real-world laboratory for climate protection and adaptation. The “ClimateHOOD_CampusPARK” project is implementing structural measures: For example, rainwater from roofs is collected and reused. Following the “sponge city” principle, retention areas are being created on roofs, facades, and open spaces. Cisterns, reed beds, mini-marshes, and vertical farms help retain water. We’re presenting the project, a vertical farm model, and the processing of harvested food in collaboration with the B!NErLe department.

Testing, Experimentation, Real-World Labs – 2nd Provider Meeting at the Charlottenburg Campus!

2026-07-01T11:08:20+02:00

Test sites, experimental areas, and real-world labs exist and are emerging in Berlin and Brandenburg. For some, experimental clauses are relevant within heavily regulated sectors. Others are developing and testing innovative practices without needing to address regulatory requirements. Together with Berlin Partner for Business and Technology, the Senate Department for Economics, Energy, and Public Enterprises, and Zukunftsorte Berlin, we invite providers and interested parties to the 2nd networking meeting to tap into synergies for the growing metropolitan region and make transformation visible!
